June 3 Disaster: NADMO unsure of exact number of victims

Monday, 30 May 2016 20:36

The National Disaster Management Organisation’s office at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it cannot tell the exact number of victims of the twin-disaster on June 3, 2015.

Over 150 persons were reported to have died from the fire-and-flood disaster at the Goil Petrol Station near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

Several others were injured.

Speaking to TV3’s Peter Quao Adattor on Monday, May 30, Director of NADMO at AMA Alhaji Benjamin Seidu said his outfit had to visit a number of medical facilities in Accra for lists of persons hospitalized as a result of the disaster.

He said some of the victims contacted his office directly, a move the office raised eyebrows at given the likely involvement of confidence tricksters.

“If we are not careful we will end up giving the wrong people what we are supposed to give the victims,” Alhaji Seidu said.

“So we have to take our time to make sure that people who are going to receive whatever assistance from the government are the right people.”

He mentioned the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital as two of the medical facilities they contacted for lists of victims.

Alhaji Seidu revealed how his outfit had to crosscheck the lists it received from the hospitals.

“We had to do some elimination so that we arrive at the right number.”

In discussing one year on after the disaster with respect to any lessons learnt, Alhaji Seidu said: "The attitude of the public is very appalling."

He said their work has been made difficult due to the activities of the public.

"Sometimes we don't know whether it is intentional or not."
