Black Wednesday remembered: over 150 lives lost on June 3, 2015

Friday, 03 June 2016 08:44

A commemoration service would be held Friday June 3, 2016 for the estimated 150 lives that were lost when the country was struck by a twin-disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Ghana went through a difficult moment and rescuers were overstretched when some parts of the capital, Accra were flooded and compounded by an explosion at the Goil filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle last year June 3.

Hundreds of people were caught in the inferno and trapped by the flood at Circle. Over 150 people lost their lives that (un)fateful day. Properties running into millions of cedis were lost to the floods and fire.

A DNA test was conducted on many of the charred bodies, which enabled their families to identify them.

Many survivors, who were well-to-do, now rely on benevolent people to survive. Many complained that supports promised them by the state and other organizations have not been fulfilled.

President Mahama, government functionaries, local authorities, traditional leaders, victims and a host of others would gather at the defunct Goil filling station – the disaster scene – to mark the one year anniversary.

The President is expected to lay wreath after he addressed the gathering.
